Textile Dyeing and Chemical Pollution in the Fashion Industry


The fashion industry is a major global contributor to environmental pollution. From the production of raw materials to manufacturing and dyeing processes, it is estimated that 20% of industrial water pollution worldwide comes from textile dyeing alone. The use of toxic chemicals in these processes harms the environment and negatively impacts public health. There is an urgent need for sustainable solutions within the fashion industry in order to protect our planet and its inhabitants.

How Does Textile Dyeing Work?

The process of dyeing textiles is an integral part of the fashion industry. It involves the application of colored dyes, paints, pigments, and other colorant materials onto fabric fibers to create a finished product. 

The textile dyeing process begins by carefully selecting the appropriate dye, considering factors such as fabric composition, desired hue, and environmental impact. The fashion industry employs a wide range of dyes, each with unique characteristics. Reactive dyes form a strong chemical bond with the fabric, making them suitable for natural fibers like cotton and silk. Acid dyes are ideal for protein-based fibers such as wool and nylon, as they create intense, long-lasting shades. Disperse dyes, on the other hand, find their application in synthetic materials like polyester. Pigment dyes offer versatility and can be used across various fabric types, resulting in vibrant, opaque tones.

Beyond the selection of dyes, the dyeing process itself involves techniques such as immersion, where fabrics are fully submerged in a dye bath, or printing, which employs methods like screen printing or digital printing to apply color in specific patterns. Each type of dye – and each application method – comes with its own environmental impacts and byproducts.

Pollution from Textile Dyeing

Dyeing is a very water-intensive process. As a result, the wastewater generated from dyeing procedures is a major source of pollution, as it often contains high concentrations of dye residues, chemicals, salts, and other pollutants. When discharged untreated or inadequately treated, these effluents can contaminate rivers, lakes, and groundwater, negatively impacting aquatic ecosystems and compromising the health of organisms – including people who rely on the water body for drinking water. 

Many of the chemicals used in textile dyeing are highly toxic and can be devastating to the environment when released. Many dyes contain heavy metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium, and chromium; nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEOs) (used as surfactants, substances that help the dye penetrate the fabric evenly); and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). For example, synthetic dyes often contain heavy metals, AZO compounds (which are carcinogenic), and other toxic substances that are released during the dyeing process and find their way into water bodies. These toxins not only harm aquatic life but also affect public health due to their potential effects on human organs and endocrine systems. 

Besides chemical pollution, the textile dyeing process leads to other forms of environmental degradation. Textile dyeing’s reliance on water leads to significant water consumption and depletion of freshwater resources. Additionally, the energy-intensive nature of dyeing processes contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, exacerbating climate change. The cumulative effect of these pollution sources highlights the urgent need for the fashion industry to adopt more sustainable and eco-friendly dyeing practices to minimize its environmental footprint.

Solutions to Reduce Pollution from Textile Dyeing

There are a few strategies the fashion industry can employ to reduce the negative impacts of textile dyeing on the environment and human health.

1. Using natural dyes: Natural dyes are derived from plants, insects, shellfish, and other biological sources. This means they are non-toxic, biodegradable, and don’t require harsh chemicals in the production process. As a result, there is a much lower risk of water contamination or environmental damage. The use of natural dyes also has the potential to give fabrics unique colors and patterns that can’t be created with synthetic dyes, making it ideal for creating distinctive fashion pieces. 

However, there are some drawbacks to using natural dyes. For example, they can be expensive and difficult to obtain in large quantities, making them unsuitable for mass production. They also require more skill and experience to produce consistent results compared to traditional synthetic dyes. In addition, some natural dyes may not be colorfast, meaning they can fade or transfer onto other fabrics with frequent wear and washing.

2. Ensuring proper textile testing: To mitigate the environmental impact of textile dyeing further, thorough testing of fabrics and dyes is crucial. Implementing rigorous testing procedures in a trusted textile testing laboratory will ensure that the selected dyes and textiles meet ecological standards and are safe for consumers and the ecosystem.
This involves comprehensive assessments, such as colorfastness, durability, and resistance to fading during repeated washing. By conducting tests that simulate real-world usage scenarios, manufacturers can easily identify potential issues early in the production process and make informed decisions about the sustainability of their chosen dyes.

3. Choosing low-impact synthetic dyes: Low-impact dyes are a type of synthetic dye made from water-soluble polymers. These dyes have several advantages over traditional, petroleum-based dyes, such as reduced water usage and fewer toxic chemicals released into the air and water. Low-impact dyes often require less energy for production and are often more durable than petroleum-based dyes. However, low-impact dyes may not be suitable for all fabric types, so this strategy must be used in conjunction with others.

4. Using eco-friendly dyeing techniques: Advanced dyeing techniques like digital printing and dyeing with reduced liquor ratios help to reduce pollution caused by textile dyeing. Digital printing allows for precise and controlled coloring, which means less dye is needed and fewer harmful chemicals are released into the environment. Dyeing with reduced liquor ratios means using less water and dye, which reduces the amount of wastewater generated and lowers the amount of chemicals that need to be treated or thrown away. These techniques are important because they help save resources, reduce chemical use, and minimize pollution.

5. Utilizing closed-loop systems: Closed-loop systems help to reduce waste from textile dyeing by recapturing wastewater and returning it into the system for reuse. This reduces water contamination and the amount of water needed for processing. These systems can also be used to capture and reutilize gasses that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere, further reducing pollution. 

6. Promoting supply chain transparency: Companies can actively engage in promoting supply chain transparency to ensure responsible sourcing and manufacturing practices. By partnering with suppliers that adhere to sustainable dyeing methods and comply with stringent environmental regulations, as well as through undergoing regular environmental auditing, companies can guarantee the use of eco-friendly dyes and safe wastewater treatment practices. This is particularly important when relying on suppliers in countries with loose environmental regulations, as wastewater may not be treated effectively. Not only does a strong ESG practice protect the environment, but transparency also builds trust among consumers and demonstrates a commitment to environmentally-conscious operations.

By employing these solutions and more, companies can create a more sustainable approach to textile dyeing, and thus make the fashion industry as a whole more sustainable.
